More About The Romans
Legend has it that Rome was founded in 753 BC by two brothers, Romulus and Remus. Like ancient Egypt, Rome was an advanced civilization that even today plays an important part in our lives. Roman legions invaded other countries and certainly left their long-lasting mark. For example, the language we use today was developed from the Romans. The calendar was started by Julius Caesar, the months being named after Roman gods. In fact, July is named after Julius Caesar himself. The law and legal system originated in Rome as well as the census. Let’s not forget that the Romans had a hand in inventing and building straight roads, central heating, concrete and aqueducts.
Let’s take a look at the clothing of the Romans. Slaves and common people wore coarse and dark material, whilst the elite wore costumes made of linen or white wool. The toga was a cloth that was about 20ft in length and was wrapped around the body and worn over a tunic. It was usually made of wool whilst the tunic underneath was made of linen. After second century BC the toga was worn exclusively by men, whilst women had to wear the stola, a long pleated dress worn over a tunic. Roman footwear was also distinctive, sandals which were tied around the ankle with thin strips of leather. In fact, modern gladiator sandals, inspired by the originals, are bang on trend.
Here are some of my favorite movies of all time that depict the Roman Empire in all its glory.
Ben Hur (1959) is an epic of truly biblical proportions. Charlton Heston stars as Judah Ben-Hur and is a tale full of betrayal and revenge. Who can forget the amazing Chariot Race?
Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) shows an absolutely magnificent recreation of this ancient empire and its ultimate fall. Stars the beautiful Sophia Loren and the equally handsome Stephen Boyd, who also starred in Ben Hur.
Gladiator (2000) is a modern day epic that brings back the glory of Rome. It stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general who is betrayed and his family murdered by a corrupt prince. He goes to Rome and becomes a gladiator in order to seek revenge.
I, Claudius first appeared in 1976 as a television mini-series. It follows the history of Rome from the death of Marcellus in the first episode to the death of Claudius in the last. This is certainly a lavish costume drama which at the time as very shocking.
