Roman Centurion Costume

Roman centurions were commanding officers of the Roman Army and were so called because they were in charge of a “century” (centuria), a group of eighty men. They were easily identified because they wore the crests of their helmets sideways, instead of front to back like the normal soldiers. They also wore armour of chain mail, medals on his chest and a cloak of fine material. They also wore their sword on the left and dagger on the right. A centurion was chosen because of his size, strength and skill.
The Roman soldiers, under the command of the centurions, were also very strong and tough. They also wore a uniform and armour to protect themselves from being wounded in battle. The basic equipment of a Roman solider was a helmet, armour, sword, shield, red battle cloak and sandals or military boots.
