Most people tend to wrap a sheet around them and pass it off as a toga, but these bear very little resemblance to a real toga. In fact, the toga was a cloth which was wrapped around the body and worn over a tunic. The cloth was around six feet long and usually made of wool. A toga was exclusively worn by men and only citizens of Rome were allowed to wear them. Over time the toga became more complicated, the cloth longer and it became a burden to wear. Women were expected to wear a stola which was a long pleated dress worn over a tunic.
To finish off your Roman toga costume you need to wear the appropriate footwear. Whilst women tended to wear closed shoes, men wore sandals with straps which were wound round the leg to the middle of the calf and tied. Then there’s the laurel wreath which was worn like a crown usually by the emperors. The laurel wreath was regarded as a powerful symbol of victory.
